Why Create A Blog? My Reasoning
A few of the many reasons that come to mind related to why I created this blog.
Value
I feel I have something to share an value to add that will benefit myself and others and there is still plenty of room for new ideas.
Community
Making my thoughts and findings available to the public is not much extra effort and is a better way to share information than by email which is somewhat of a dead end compared to a blog.
Lifestyle
I'm a Web Designer and on a computer most of the day so I come across a lot of interesting information. I keep a sketchbook and a blog seems like a logical extension.
Blogs Are Thriving
Twitter may be all the rage today but blogging is now mainstream and a great form of communication especially for longer forms of writing. A user can get current information and interact with the writer through comments. Newspapers, and other types of sites, have taken notice and have adapted by incorporating more blogs. For example see the long list of New York Times blogs. (http://www.nytimes.com/ref/topnews/blog-index.html).
Curiosity and The Challenge
Customize a blog, learn a new application (CMS), use my design and code skills, understand the intricacies of blogging, can I write? can I keep a blog going?
The Unexpected
Anything can happen, where will this lead? I have nothing to lose and everything to gain
Inspiration
Potentially contribute to a community that has shared insights into how they work, best practices, etc.
What makes a good blog?
Good content on a regular basis. Technical features don't make or break a blog but bad content will. Writing good content that people want to read is no easy task. I consider the following three sites to be the benchmark for successful blogs with good content. Each one has continued to keep me coming back for more and have inspired me.
- Subtraction by Khoi Vihn
- Simplebits by Dan Cederholm
- A List Apart by Jeffrey Zeldman and various authors
